Prednisone is a synthetic kortikosteroid; it is used for treating rheumatic diseases, severe allergies, various inflammatory conditions and leukemia. Prednisone is also used for treating the following conditions: suprarenal insufficiency, collagenoses, chronic inflammatory diseases affecting joints, intestine; blood, lung and eye diseases; malignant neoplasms, disseminated sclerosis. The starting dosage taken for treating nephrotic syndrome is mg/kg/day, the maximal dosage is 80 mg/day for 5- 28 days; if proteinuria holds on, a dose of 4mg/day every second day (maximal dose up to 120mg/day) for 28 days is prescribed.The supporting dosage is 2mg/kg taken every second day for 28days (maximal dose is 80mg), then it is gradually withdrawn within 4-6 weeks. The dosage for patients with suprarenal insufficiency is 45 mg/kg/day for children and 560 mg/day for adults.
